One evening. An island looking towards the caldera.

Santorini celebrated Ifestia on Saturday, 19 September 2026. After sunset, the volcanic-eruption reenactment brought fireworks and light to the landscape that gives the island its unmistakable character.

A celebration — not a real eruption

Ifestia is a staged reenactment celebrating Santorini’s volcanic heritage. The eruption imagery is part of the festival, not an actual volcanic eruption.

Instead of a conventional stage, the celebration takes the caldera landscape as its backdrop. The tradition dates to 1991. The organisers named for 2026 are the Municipality of Thira, GEOTHIRA and the Loula & Evangelos Nomikos Foundation. Essence Tours provides local tours and transport; we are not the festival organiser.

650 drones telling Santorini’s story

The drone light show was a central part of the 2026 celebration. According to the event coverage by Ethnos, approximately 650 drones took to the sky, building on the drone show introduced the previous year.

Coordinated points of light formed images inspired by Santorini’s volcano and history before the fireworks finale. Among the scenes captured in the photographs was the illuminated “Santorini Volcano Festival” title, with a volcanic outline above it.

The drone formations brought a different rhythm to the evening: carefully arranged shapes and lettering in the darkness, followed by the spreading bursts of the fireworks. Both were part of Ifestia, rather than a separate festival.
