One evening, an island looking towards the caldera. Ifestia, Santorini’s Volcano Festival, returns on Saturday 19 September 2026, with the volcanic-eruption reenactment planned after sunset.
The date and after-sunset timing are confirmed in the Municipality of Thira announcement. An exact start time and detailed 2026 programme were not yet available in the announcement checked on 9 September. Check the organiser’s updates before making final plans.
A celebration of the island’s volcanic story
Also written as Ifaisteia or Ηφαίστεια, the festival uses fireworks to recreate the spectacle of an eruption. It is a staged celebration, not an actual volcanic eruption.
The tradition began in 1991. The 2026 announcement names the Municipality of Thira, GEOTHIRA and the Loula & Evangelos Nomikos Foundation. Essence Tours is a local transport and tour provider, not the festival organiser.

Choose your caldera viewpoint
Start by choosing a place with a clear view towards the volcanic islands. Caldera-facing areas of Fira, Firostefani and Imerovigli are practical places to consider. In Oia, check the exact viewing angle before settling on a terrace or restaurant.
- Public viewpoints: arrive with time to walk to your chosen spot and keep paths and access routes clear.
- Restaurants and hotel terraces: ask the venue about its view, access and any reservation or minimum-spend requirements.
- Boat outings: confirm the specific sailing, departure port, return arrangements and inclusions directly with its operator.
These are planning suggestions, not reserved viewing areas or a guarantee of visibility. Check local instructions on the day.
Plan the journey there and back
For an evening event, plan the return pickup as carefully as the outward journey. Send us your accommodation, preferred viewing area, group size and approximate return time. We can discuss a suitable vehicle, meeting point and quotation before confirming transport.
- Allow extra time for evening traffic and the walk from the nearest vehicle-accessible drop-off.
- If your accommodation is reached by steps or pedestrian lanes, agree a reachable meeting point in advance.
- Tell us about child seats, luggage or walking difficulties so we can discuss suitable arrangements.
- Keep the agreed contact number and pickup instructions available for the return journey.

Do I need a boat to watch?
No. You can plan to watch from a suitable caldera-facing location on the island. A boat outing is a separate option.
Is it a real eruption?
No. It is a fireworks reenactment celebrating Santorini’s volcanic heritage.
Can I reserve a viewing spot through a transfer booking?
No. A vehicle booking covers the agreed transport only. Any terrace, restaurant or boat reservation must be arranged separately.
Can we organise a return pickup?
